5 Writing rituals for success #MFRWauthor

Writing books is not magicWhen I first saw the topic for the week, writing rituals, I had to stop and think. I don’t have any writing rituals. I know that writing a book takes work—it’s not magic (darn it!). But I have trouble thinking of it as a job to do every day. I’ve let my dreams fizzle without intending to. Anyway, because I have no writing rituals of my own, I looked up the topic and found this great article in a 2015 HuffPost article.

Author Jennifer Blanchard has created a killer process made of routine and ritual that keeps her focused and creative. I like her points! I’m going to try to work her ideas into my day…and maybe finish that stupid book I’ve been halfheartedly working on for a year. Here is what Jennifer does for herself:

  • Write before I do anything else (Routine). Write before you do anything else—put your writing first. It’s important. Treat it as such, like John does. See? He starts every day writing. I like that routine, John!

Start your day writing

  • Write five days a week at least (Routine). Everyone needs a break. Pick a day or two where you don’t write or don’t write as much, but success requires action. Be sure to write every other day!
  • Release fears, doubts, and excuses (Ritual). Our topic a couple of weeks ago was how fear is our greatest enemy. Jennifer recommends an action—write down your fears, your self-doubts, and excuses that allow you to justify not writing, and burn them. Let them go. They’re holding you back.
  • Acting “as if” (Ritual). This explanation struck me between the eyes. Hubby has said so many times that I get up to the edge of making my Writing as an important businesswriting matter and then I back off. Jennifer asks in this point, if you were a bestselling author, would you put your writing “off all the time or would you site down every day and write?” Wow. I really want to follow through on this point!
  • Amping up your mindset (Ritual). Simply put, believe in yourself. Don’t let preconceived notions about what you can or can’t do keep you from achieving your writing goals. Jennifer suggests making two columns on a piece of paper. On the left, list negative notions about being a successful writer. On the right, list the counter thought to the negative. Then adopt the ideas on the right. For me, I would list the self-doubt on the left that I can never measure up to friends of mine who are authors. On the right I need to say that I can be the best writer I can be. Then I need to adopt that notion. Affirmations work!

All in all, I found this article right when I needed it. I’m sending Jennifer a thank you note! 😉 We all need aids to reach our goals for writing. Jennifer’s process starts with routine and then uses the positive thinking that comes with the rituals. Find a routine that works for you. Then make the affirmations and believe them. What do you have to lose?

The Viscount’s Pet: Kryssie Fortune’s newest book!

The Viscount's Pet by Kryssie Fortune

Blurb:
When her brother tries to force her into a marriage with a detestable baron, Julianna Halstead flees the family estate she has helped manage since the death of her parents. But as she makes her escape late at night, Juliana’s carelessness nearly results in her being trampled by a galloping horse, and the steed’s handsome rider takes it upon himself to correct her right then and there.

Though having her bottom bared and soundly spanked on the side of the road leaves Juliana blushing crimson, the punishment arouses her intensely and her body’s helpless response cannot be hidden. To make matters worse, the gentleman over whose lap she was so firmly chastised turns out to be none other than Viscount Stonehurst, someone she has known since childhood.

When Stonehurst learns of Juliana’s predicament, he decides to make her his bride. She will be no ordinary wife, however. She will be something much more shameful. But even as she is leashed, collared, and put on display in a cage wearing only a tail, then brought out to be used in ways no proper lady should enjoy, will Juliana come to love her new life as the viscount’s pet?

Publisher’s Note: The Viscount’s Pet is a stand-alone novel which shares the Regency-era setting of Wickedly Used and His Innocent Bride. It includes spankings and sexual scenes. If such material offends you, please don’t buy this book.

Excerpt:

The horse and rider appeared from nowhere.

Julianna sidestepped and dropped her bag. Her ankle twisted beneath her, and she tumbled to the ground. When the horseman tugged hard at the reins, the coal-black stallion reared, its forelegs pawed the air. She screamed and closed her eyes. Curled into a ball, she waited for its ebony hooves to pulverize her.

The rider swore, the horse whickering as it planted its feet in the dirt by her face. Tiny dust clouds rose from the road. She coughed and crablike, she scuttled to the fallen oak at the edge of the copse. The bracken smelled earthy, and the thick foliage cushioned her bruised ribs.
Her heart beat overtime when the horseman dismounted and stalked toward her. Wearing a black greatcoat and muffler, he towered over her. Grabbing her wrist, he hauled her upright.

Even in the evening twilight, his hair shone the same blue-black as a raven’s wing. His features were familiar, but she had no idea why. One glance at his steeply angled eyebrows and she wondered if he was the devil come to claim her.

Her brother would have grabbed her shoulders and shaken her until her head ached. That or hurled vile insults at her. Instead, the dark horseman’s eyes twinkled with good humor. She couldn’t decide if they were midnight blue or ebony black. Their mysterious depths and sloping eyebrows gave him a demonic air.

His high cheekbones were so sharp Michelangelo could have chiseled them from marble. There was a cleft in his square chin that she wanted to stroke. His broad, kissable lips made her want to lick and taste, but they were set in a stern, disapproving frown. If he smiled, his dark charisma would mesmerize any nocturnal creatures. Bats, foxes, and badgers would flock to his side.

His utter masculinity sent shudders along her spine. Devilish and terrifying, he emanated menace and danger. She should be shaking in fear, but he sparked wicked longings in her soul.

Untouched and innocent, she hated how her nipples pearled and damp heat creamed between her legs. She needed his lips pressed against hers and his hands on her body. For a woman who’d sworn never to marry, that scared her more than his fury. If not for his tight grip on her shoulders, she’d have run off into the night.

Her pulse still raced, but she buried her fear beneath a haughty manner. “Unhand me, sir. I’m late as it is.”

Rather than let go of her arm, he tugged her closer. He smelled of citrus fruits and freshly gathered mint. When her gaze meshed with his, lightning bolts sizzled between them. Head bent, he moved toward her. She puckered her lips in anticipation.

Blinking, he straightened abruptly. “I could have killed you, you little fool.”

Disappointment crushed her soul. Her ribs ached from Kit’s assault and her ankle throbbed from her fall. Sniffing back tears, she thought of her mother’s pampered cat and tried to out-stare him. “My apologies, sir. I should have been paying attention, not daydreaming along in the twilight. Since neither of us is hurt, we can go on our own ways.”

“Not until you’ve learned your lesson,” he snapped.
Pulling free from his hold, she rubbed her wrist. Nervous, she retreated toward her portmanteau, ready to grab it and run. Shooting forward, he hoisted her over his shoulder. The undignified position made her ribs throb. His hand splayed over her rear end, caressing and stroking it as he pinned her in place.

Five steps and he’d carried her back to the tree trunk. Once settled on it, he thrust her over his knee. “Naughty little girls who risk their lives deserve a spanking. And I’m just the man to give it to you.”

Does writing energize or exhaust you?
Definitely energize. I get bad tempered if I don’t do something to inch my writing forward every day.

Ballpoint or fountain pen?
Ball point. I write in a notebook, type up, then read it through before moving on to the next chapter.

What time of the day is best for you as a writer?
Anywhere, anytime. If I have a free moment I put pen to paper. A lot of my early writing was done on the bus on the way and from work.

Who are three of your favorite authors?
Kresley Cole, Georgette Heyer, and currently J.S. Scott. The last one changes but I’ve loved the other two for years. ,

Which book – of all the books you’ve written – do you like the best?
Always the one I’m working on. I’m proud of Taken as Theirs because it was my first book to hit the top ten on it’s category. I love regency romance, and I love my latest very hot Regency romance. Georgette Heyer would be turning in her grave.

How do you research your locations?
Internet and visits. A lot of my books are set in Yorkshire, England. That’s my home county. For my Westhorpe Ridge series, I hounded friends in North Carolina to check details. For my current WIP I visited Lindisfarne in Northumberland to scout the island. (Any excuse for a weekend break with my husband.)

Research Discoveries #MFRWauthor

ResearchGenerally, I love doing research for books. Since I write contemporary romance (mostly), I usually only have to research towns where my characters live, street names and store locations and such, if I’m trying to keep it real. But I have written few historical romances, too, and for those, research becomes a little harder. And more interesting in a lot of ways.

Take for example a WIP time travel book. The time/location is 1903, North Carolina Outer Banks, right when the Wright brothers were testing out their flying skills. One of the things I learned was that the Outer Banks held very independent views about the world than the rest of North Carolina, possibly because of the amount of trading ships that came by. They were exposed to broader viewpoints. During the Civil War, they were not especially all excited to fight for the South, and the North found a safe port there. Slavery—only profitable on large farms with people-intensive crops like tobacco and cotton—was not carried on much on those narrow strips of land jutting out into the ocean. I didn’t know most of that before I started researching my book.

In another book, I was able to gaze at maps of San Francisco to plan where IResearch on the Internet wanted my heroine to live. I love maps and they are one of the things I research for most books.

The trouble with research is that it’s very easy to get sidetracked. You start looking up what the pioneers ate on the trek west, find out they ate rabbit, and suddenly find yourself reading about Beatrix Potter and her animals. Especially when researching online, it’s difficult to stay focused. In a library, with actual books, I used to be careful looking for particular Library researchpoints. I still was easily distracted but not to where three clicks on a screen can take me to different universes, not just a small digression. Still, what did we do before the Internet?? I wouldn’t go back…

Is research been fun for you? Or is it a chore?

Happy Epilogues #MFRWauthor

EpilogueI like epilogues. I write a lot of epilogues, too, probably because I like to read them. To me, they finish the book. It’s all well and good to have Heroine A say how much she loves Hero A and vice versa, but I like to see that Heroine A actually ends up with Hero A and not accidentally with Hero B. Did they marry? Have a passel of kids? Move to Timbuktu? Inquiring minds want to know. And that’s what an epilogue does for me.

The only negative I can see in an epilogue is if a reader likes to finish the book in their own imagination instead of having everything spelled out. They would be the kind of people who would like that movie trend a whileHappily Ever After back where two endings were written and which happened was up to the viewer. Or the kind who want to envision their own version of the castle Cinderella and Prince Charming lived in—was it a condo on the beach at Malibu or more like the Biltmore House in North Carolina? When it comes to ending a romance, I prefer to know. I do enough imagining about stuff, like what I’m making for dinner—actual food or reservations. I don’t need to wonder about Cinderella’s living conditions. Give me a good epilogue any time!

Charity Sunday: Tunnels to Towers Foundation

How Charity Sunday works: for every comment made on this blog post, I will donate money to the charity named. The same promise is made for every blog site listed in the group–click the Linky Links link at the bottom of this post to see the list of participants and read/comment on any of them to see a donation go to that blogger’s charity. We’re all different! Thanks for your help and your participation!

Tunnels to Towers FoundationThere are events in our lives that we always remember where we were when we heard it happened. For me, some of those events were when John Kennedy was shot, when Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon, when Captain Jeremiah Denton arrived home from his nearly eight years of imprisonment in Vietnam, and, of course, when the towers and Pentagon were struck and the folks on United 93 willingly made the ultimate sacrifice.

On the morning on 9/11/2001, Jack and I were living in San Francisco. Jack had a conference in San Diego the next day and we were anxious to get on the road for the long drive. We called his mom in Virginia before we left just to let her know where we would be for the next few days. She said a plane had crashed into the trade towers in New York, but gave no further details. I think like most, she was in shock from what she had been watching on TV.

But we were in a hurry. We expressed some semblance of concern but really, we envisioned a small plane glancing off the iconic buildings. We had no idea at all that the world had just shifted.

While driving down I-5 we found a radio station, and finally the sheer panic and horror of what had happened on the east coast began to sink in. We had gone a couple hundred miles when we turned around and went home, only to huddle in front of the TV, trying to understand how such a thing could happen—just like the rest of the nation.

One of the good things to come from that miserable day was the Tunnels to Towers Foundation. The foundation helps families of first responders and military personnel who have fallen. These families not only have to deal with the loss of a loved one but also their income. Tunnel to Towers pays the mortgage on their houses—in full! The relief this must bring is a gift for the soul as much as the benefit of a physical structure. I am honored to gift them this Charity Sunday.

Please comment. Do you know about this organization?

Mystic Desire A Supernatural Anthology

Cool, creative Callie Carmen caught in a Dream Catcher

Dream Catcher by Callie Carmen in Mystic DesireI’m so anxious for the Black Velvet Seductions supernatural anthology, Mystic Desire, to come out (October 1)! One reason is, I want to read Callie’s story, Dream Catcher!

NA: Welcome Callie! What genre would you consider your books to be?
CC: First, I’d like to thank Dee for having me on her blog today. I appreciate it. [My pleasure!]
My name is Callie Carmen, and I write contemporary romance, suspense romance, and most recently supernatural romance novels.

NA: How did you get interested in writing this particular genre?
CC: Until 2015 I hadn’t read a romance novel. One day while traveling in my car listening to the Diane Rym show she had on a guest author of Fifty Shades of Grey. I found the conversation interesting, so I picked up a copy of the book and read it. While I didn’t go in that direction after reading it I enjoyed it enough to try Lora Leigh’s Nauti Boys series, Lori Foster’s Love Undercover series. her Visitation series, and the Maya Banks KGI series, and that was it, I was hooked on reading romance. From there, I sat at my kitchen table one day and started writing my first novel, Patrick from my Risking Love series. I enjoyed writing it so much that I kept on going.

NA: How important are character names to you in your books? Is there a special meaning to any of the names?
CC: I have to laugh at that question. I had used a few relative’s names in my first novel The Enemy I Know as part of the Crave Loyalty Anthology, all of which were already deceased. But in my Risking Love series, I started out using a few family female names, two of which were my sister’s daughter’s names. She was having none of that. She said there is no way I want my daughters in a sex book. I explained it was a love story, and she could have cared less. I ended up changing their names. Since then, I only use names that are family members that have passed away so they can’t complain. Lol. Or names that I enjoy, like Jake the hero in my latest novel, Dream Catcher, from the Mystic Desire Supernatural Anthology.

NA: Tell me about your latest book.
CC: Dream Catcher is the story of two lonely people that put work ahead of their personal needs like finding their true love. But when each of them purchases a magical dream catcher made by a shaman, they find themselves falling in love with their soul mate. Unfortunately, their soul mate is only in their dreams.

This is just one of fourteen wonderful stories by talented authors that have joined together in the Mystic Desire Supernatural Romance Anthology. I just know all who read this novel will thoroughly enjoy it. Below you’ll find the blurbs for each of the fourteen stories. Check them out, and you’ll see why I think you’ll love this book.

NA: What is the hardest part of writing for you?
CC: Believe it or not, the blurb on the back cover of the novel is torture for me. Taking a 250-page book, and turning it into three short paragraphs is next to impossible for me.

NA: What do you consider to be your best accomplishment?
CC: Finding my soul mate and having a loving, happy marriage for over thirty years. Having three caring children with him, that turned out to be good citizens and that work hard.

NA: What’s the best thing about being an author?
CC: All the friends you make in and out of the publishing world.

NA: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
CC: In a smaller home, on a lake, writing. I’ll be sitting in a screened-in front porch while listening to the waves lap up against my dock.

NA: If you didn’t like writing books or weren’t any good at it, what would you like to do for a living?
CC: Well, that calls for two different answers. If I wasn’t any good at it, I’d take a few classes to learn how to do it right. Or I’d get a fantastic editor like Laurie Sanders to teach me what I needed to do to improve. But if I couldn’t write, I would want to be a book buyer for B&N. I used to work as a senior book buyer for the other large book chain that sadly is no longer in business. I loved that career.

NA: Do you read reviews of your book(s)? Do you respond to them, good or bad? How do you deal with the bad?
CC: I always read them, so that I can thank the writer for taking the time to read my book and to review it. Not that many of us are willing to write reviews so I appreciate them and feel the kind individual should be thanked.

I have skipped writing to two individuals that both gave me my only one ratings. One said she looked at the first page of Patrick and refused to read the book because there was a serial killer in the story. I had to laugh at the fact that she wrote the review stating that she hadn’t read it.

The other person read the first few pages which happened to be the serial killer’s point of view, and she decided she couldn’t continue reading the story because of the creepy serial killer. Even though she gave me a one rating, I took that as a compliment because he was supposed to be scary.

NA: Where did your love of books come from?
CC: Both my mother and father read every day. My father loved westerns and mystery novels. My mother loved fiction and took my siblings and me to the library often. She’d bring home a few novels for herself and piles of children’s books to read to us. I remember Barbar books being some of her favorite kid’s books. I enjoyed them too and read them to my own children. I loved that they were done in cursive writing. So many schools now don’t teach cursive, which is unfortunate because all of our original United States documents were written in cursive.

NA: Of all the characters you have created, which is your favorite, and why?
CC: When I’m writing a novel, the main characters become my new favorites. So this is ever-changing.

At the moment, I’m crazy about Tony and Tessa from book four, Anthony. That man is the silent type except when it comes to the right woman. Then he has no problem letting her know exactly what he wants. He is also talented in the kitchen in more ways than one.

Tessa is a wealthy, but down to earth woman that would like nothing better than to play some football with all of her friends. She wants to be and independent, and a successful business owner to show her rich father she can do it on her own. And she loves making hot passionate love. The woman is hot to trot.

Dream Catcher by Callie Carmen in Mystic DesireNA: Does writing energize or exhaust you?
CC: It’s not a curse; I love writing. Especially when I’m writing about things that have happened to me in my past. I have put on a bit of weight from the long hours of sitting at the computer writing, editing, and marketing my books on social media. So that’s a bit of a negative. Don’t you hate it when that happens?

NA: What is your writing Kryptonite?
CC: My eyes get tired after looking at the computer screen for too long. I end up falling asleep with my hands on the keys and waking to something that looks like this:
On my way homeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

That also happens to Jake in my, Dream Catcher, supernatural romance. He’s a successful romance author and spends a good deal of time at the computer. Once in a while, he falls asleep while writing. But he doesn’t mind because it gives him more time with his dream soul mate Angelica.

NA: What one piece of writing advice do you have for an aspiring author?
CC: This might not be advice that newer writers want to hear, but it is essential for you to be as successful as possible. Set up your social media sites right away. That means do it before you even finish your first book. That is not to say that it is ever too late to do. It just has to be done. If you don’t advertise to let people know about your book, how will they know that it exists? Once they are set up, advertise your books on a regular basis. Set up social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Tumblr, Instagram, MeWe, Website, and Goodreads, to name a few. Pick three to start and master those before moving on to others, or you will be too overwhelmed.

Contest Queen #MFRWauthor

Entering a writing contestPersonally, I think it’s worth entering writing contests. I am a Contest Queen. Or least a Princess. Or…okay, a Duchess. But I do like contests. I don’t enter a huge number of them because the cost can run up. But I did enter the Dixie Kane Memorial Contest for several years running (placing 1st for three years), and also the Maggie Contest, where I’ve placed 1st, 3rd, and Honorable Mention. I need that 2nd place spot for a full house! This year my novel Only a Good Man Will Do placed 1st in the I Heart Indie contest!!

What are the positives of entering contests?

  • The sense of affirmation you get if your book is honored. This isn’t a small thing—we all need the pat on the back.
  • For winning both the Maggie and the Dixie Kane contests, my work was requested by agents. Having your work read by an agent was the 1st place prize in the Dixie Kane. (Sadly, I took a hiatus from writing for a few years and it looks like the Dixie Kane might not be held any longer.)
  • You get (usually) useful feedback about your work. There are always ways to improve and the judges will tell you what they see.
  • It gets your name in front of people—sometimes influential people. Judges are readers, too, and if they like what they read of yours they might try a book and tell their friends, who (guess what!) are also readers.

So what’s against entering contests?Writing contest award

  • They all require a fee. I’ve paid as little as $15, but the average cost—especially if you are entering a contest sponsored by an RWA chapter to which you don’t belong—is about $30. I looked into a national contest last spring that required $100 to enter!!
  • Some contests don’t give feedback. The judges assign a score for story traits but don’t add anything to say what you did well or poorly.
  • It takes time to gather the material you need to enter. Every contest is different and they ask for different things.

For me, the benefits outweigh the negatives. I’ve entered four contests this year and when my new book is released (One Woman Only in October), I’ll be entering it in contests. Jump in! Most of the chapters (or other organizations) use contests to make the money they need to offer events to their members, so it helps them and you!

Relief! I don’t have to do it again! #MFRWauthor

Cleaning suppliesI’ll admit it. I’m cheap. So to ask what I would pay someone else to do in my place is kind of a hard one. There are plenty of things I don’t like to do—dusting, vacuuming, spring cleaning, cleaning the bathroom (notice a theme here?)—but would I actually pay someone money to do them for me? Hmm. Maybe. It’s all relative. How much are we talking here?

When I lived in Virginia, years ago, I paid a woman I know $25/day to come in every two weeks and do the things I listed above, except spring cleaning. She spent 2-3 hours and when I came home, it was heaven! To get the same service now I’d have to pay three times that amount. I’m not sure $75/day would feel like heaven or hell. Sure, the house would be clean but… $75!! There’s a limit to how much I’m willing to give up for a clean house!

What I would pay someone else to do for me—and I do pay for—is take Lawn carecare of the lawn. I spent m childhood mowing the grass, but I sure don’t want to do it now. We have a postage-size lawn area, but it’s still worth it to pay a young man to fertilize, trim and mow the grass. Now there is less chance of meeting up with a snake, being injured by a stray rock, or getting sunburned on my neck. Win-win all around!

Yes, I am cheap, but even I have my dreams. And I will pay for them! 😉

Linda Burson and Murder Among Friends

Linda, welcome to Nomad Authors!

Murder Among Friends by Linda Burson

NA: How did you come up with the idea for your book?

LB: I used to work for a Private Investigator so the idea stemmed from that. I added some creative licensing and threw in some characters that were a mix of a few people I knew during that time.

NA: What sort of research did you do to write this book?

LB: I visited the areas that I mentioned in the book. I made sure my timelines worked for driving distances between Boston and the town in Connecticut. I also did some brief research regarding law degrees and interrogation techniques.

NA: What is the main thing you want readers to take away from your book?

LB: I just want readers to be entertained, to feel like they are somewhere else and a part of other’s lives for the time they are reading the story. Personally, I love to escape once-in-a-while through books. I hope my novels are escapes for readers and at the end, they are satisfied with their adventure.

NA: Do you have a day job? What was your job before you started writing full time?

LB: Basically, I’m retired for the most part. I ran multiple businesses for many years. The last fifteen years, I owned and operated a computerized embroidery and products promotion business.

NA: What started you on the path to writing?

LB: I’ve always loved writing, from the first writing assignment I was given at the age of eight. I never stopped. I used to write stories for fun while other kids were complaining about writing.

Finally, after a serious bout of breast cancer, and losing my best friend to the same disease, I decided it was time to do what I loved the most…that life was too short to put everything else ahead of what was in my heart. So, I sat down one day and began my full-time writing journey.

NA: What do your friends and family think about your being a writer?

LB: I think for the most part they are proud of me…proud that I actually made this commitment and stuck with it. Most of the time, no one makes any comments about it. Maybe it’s just because it’s a part of who I am so they figured nothing needs to be said; I’m not sure. I guess they think of it as my normal job, just like they all have regular jobs. I suppose if I became a NY Times bestselling author or something similar, or if a producer wanted to make a movie from one of my novels, then they may make mention of it and make a bigger deal about it. As of now, none of my family members even read my books as far as I know. Most friends, though, will usually ask how I’m doing with the writing.

NA: Do you outline books ahead of time or are you more of a by-the-seat-of-your-pants writer?

LB: I’m definitely a panster. I get as comfortable as I can and start writing what’s in my head. Eventually, though, I jot down information so I can keep it all straight in my mind. I don’t want to have a character with green eyes and wavy hair in Chapter 1 and then have it change in Chapter 20. I want to keep track of other traits, etc. as well and that goes for spellings of names.

NA: What has been one of your most rewarding experiences as an author?

LB: Meeting so many wonderful authors on social media. It is a much bigger community than I ever realized. There are many that are kind, thoughtful, and helpful. They don’t see themselves in competition with you, but as a colleague. Not ALL OF THEM are this way, but most of the ones I associate with the most, definitely are terrific.

An author not promoting another author is not only sad, but ridiculous. Think about it…if a book is really good and you love it, you can read it in one night! I do this all the time. In this case, you could literally read seven books a week. Okay, not normal, but possible. The point I’m trying to make is, we can read many, many books from a variety of authors and still want to read more and more. There’s no reason to feel intimidated or jealous of another. Of course we want to be successful, but recommending another’s book if you enjoyed it, should be easy to do.

NA: What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

LB: If I’m not writing a book, I’m editing one, or reading another. I spend many hours marketing and promoting my work, and I put a newsletter together once a month. Right now, my assistant and I are working on revamping the first book in my MARCY SERIES. If that goes well, we may continue with the others in the series.

I make sure I work out with a fitness trainer a couple times a week to stay fit and healthy. Sometimes, I need to get out and take a drive to clear my mind. This is when I recharge so I may return home and continue the writing process. I’m also a new grandmother, so if there is any time available to visit my new gorgeous granddaughter, I will do that in a heartbeat.

NA: What are your top three favorite books of all time?

LB: This is a difficult question. I don’t know how anyone can answer this question. Usually, my favorite book is the one I’m reading at the moment. Of course, I do like some books better than others, but there are so many novels out there, I couldn’t pick just three. I don’t even think I’ve read my top three favorite books as of yet. I haven’t read enough to answer this question.

NA: What’s one of your pet peeves?

LB: I have a few pet peeves. One of my biggest, and it stems from being an author, is the way some people write reviews. When someone bashes another’s hard work and livelihood, it would be nice if they would be specific about why they bashed it.

If a reader has a problem with a book they’ve read because they don’t believe in a certain behavior, that doesn’t mean the book was bad. They’re taking a personal opinion about a lifestyle and using it against the author.

I may not like BDSM, but if the story is well-written, has a great story-line, is edited well, flows, and has no plot holes, etc.; it’s a good book and deserves a good rating. Just because I don’t live my life that way, doesn’t mean I give a bad review because I don’t believe in it. I’ve seen people do this time and time again.

I just don’t get it. If you don’t like the subject of a book, don’t read it! I hate to end a story crying my eyes out; however, I read a book last year that put me into a deep depression because it was so sad. Did I give it a bad review? NO!! It was a phenomenal story. I don’t like to have a sad ending, but that’s a personal preference. It was still a fantastic book. Of course I could go on about other topics people might not believe in — drug addicts, plural relationships, having children out of wedlock…blah, blah, blah. It’s called fiction for a reason. Unless there are multiple errors and the story is rushed or inconsistent, I don’t see giving it one or two stars because — well, because I didn’t like the fact that the woman in the story cheated on her husband.

NA: Why did you choose the shirt you have on?

LB: I normally choose something for comfort. Of course, I love to look good in it — hopefully thinner LOL — however, comfort is always my first thought.

NA: What errand/chore do you despise the most?

LB: I’m not fond of grocery shopping, believe it or not. I know most people don’t understand this, but I just don’t enjoy it. Of course, I love food. I don’t even mind preparing meals occasionally, but going to the store? I’d rather not!

NA: What famous person would you like to have dinner with?

LB: Since this is kind-of a fantasy question, I think I’ll reply with a fantasy answer. Instead of a famous person, I’d love to have dinner with my entire maternal-side from generations back. If I could get all the grandparents way back to the great-great-great-great grandparents on my mother’s parents side; it would be incredible!

NA: What are you working on now?

LB: I’ve just completed another romantic suspense book that I’m almost finished editing. I’m still working on a women’s fiction story that I started about a year ago, and I’m in the process of revamping the first book in my MARCY SERIES called, RAGE.

NA: If I could spend time writing anywhere in the world, where would I choose to go?

LB: I would love to visit a historical castle somewhere in England, Ireland, or Scotland. A large castle that had a wonderful old library with the most perfect desk to place my laptop, a comfortable chair to sit, and a roaring fireplace for those chilly days and nights; and as my muse, enough property and gardens to roam for hours. Of course, there would need to be a staff so I don’t have to break my concentration by preparing meals, drinks, and snacks. What a perfect dream! [NA: You’d hear my knocking at the castle gates!]

Murder Among Friends blurb:
Emotionally and mentally, Camille Thurston has had it. She needs a rest from her high- pressure job and Boston’s energetic lifestyle. A sabbatical at her brother Zach’s Connecticut home seems like the perfect change of scenery. Little does she know that even in a small town, she can’t escape the intensity of her profession.

A woman is reported missing. Zach and his partner, Russ Nolan, are on the case, and Camille with her own background in private investigation decides she can’t sit by idly. However, things become complicated when she becomes involved not only with the case, but with the family of the missing woman.

Excerpt:
As Frank parks, Cammy sees what she’s guessing to be her brother’s unmarked police vehicle coming toward her. The headlights are bright and are blinding her. When they turn off the lights, she confirms in her mind that it’s him and Russ.

She climbs out of her car. Zach doesn’t stand on formality. He walks right over to her and gives her a big hug. “You always scare me to death, sis.”

“Sorry, Zachary; it’s my fault. Hello there. I’m Frank Dees. I drove her like the escaping bank robber.”

“Frank, it’s great to meet you Thank you for bringing her. I really appreciate it.”

“No thanks necessary, Zach. She wasn’t gettin’ away from me unless she performed magic and disappeared into thin air.”

“I’m so happy to hear you say that. I’m already calming down. This is my partner, Russ Nolan. Russ, Cam’s boss, Frank Dees, retired decorated police officer.”

“You can leave out the decorated part,” Frank says as he shakes hands with Russ.

“No sir. You earned it and deserve the recognition. It’s an honor to meet you. Thank you for taking such good care of my sister. She worries me.”

“She’s damn good at what she does, Zach. Believe me. I’m more than proud of her.”

“That’s great to hear coming from you, Frank.” Zach notes. “Well, let’s go inside and get this over with.”

“Zach, please let me go in first.”

“Cam, you know I can’t let you tell him. You’re not even supposed to be here.”

“I know. I won’t say anything. Just let him see me first.”

“Alright.”

“Let’s stay quiet and get off the street before the whole neighborhood comes out,” Cam whispers.

“Good idea, Cam,” Frank agrees.

They all walk up to Grant’s front door. Cam tells Zach not to ring the bell. It’s not the quietest and Grant’s bedroom is in the front of the house. He’ll most likely hear the knock. This way they won’t take a chance of waking Austin or disturbing the neighbors. Zach taps on the door a few times. There’s no answer.
“Here Zach, let me, please,” Cam whispers.
He gives her a frustrated look, then he nods his approval. Cammy knocks three times, pauses, knocks twice, pauses, and then knocks four times. She repeats this process about ten seconds later. This is when she can see the hall light up the stairs go on through the glass in the door. She knows he heard.
He darts down the stairs. She can see his shadow. She’s certain he knows it’s her. She knows she’s about to see a huge disappointment on his face when he looks behind her. She’s shaking. Her palms are sweating and her hands are fidgeting. Those three nervous signs she can’t control.
Grant hurriedly opens the front door. “Cam,” he shouts with a large smile. When he sees the three men with her, as if on remote control, the smile is gone.
Grant steps back. After looking at Zach, Russ, and Frank, he goes back to staring at Cammy.
“Well, it’s obvious something’s not right, and I’m guessing it has to do with Paula. What’d you find out?” He directs his questions to Cammy.
Zach speaks. “Grant, we believe we found your wife.”
Grant’s eyes widen and his breathing is ragged. He raises his right hand and pushes it through his hair. Cammy knows his nervous idiosyncrasies, but she’s hoping she’s the only one. She can see his hands tremble, but it’s only a slight movement. She notes Frank is watching him, but Russ and Zach are concentrating on his face.

WOW! Edgeplay and Annabel Allan

Annabel is new to Black Velvet Seductions, but she’s coming on board with a bang! I’m interested to learn more about her and her new book, Edgeplay.

Edgeplay by Anabel Allan

NA: How did you come up with the idea for your book?

AA: I became interested in BDSM when I read the Wicked Lovers series by Shayla Black. I thought to myself, I can do this! And what fun it has been writing in the genre.

NA: What is the main thing you want readers to take away from your book?

AA: That a woman can be powerful and sexy. She can be Dominant and take control of her own sexual desires. I want to empower women, as well as show that men can be submissive and powerful in their own right as well.

NA: A fun fact about writing your book.

AA: I actually started out with the main character as a man! I then switched it when it wasn’t working for the story. Now we have Ava Goode, and she’s here to stay!

NA: What started you on the path to writing?

AA: I actually started out in film school, with aspirations of being a director. I then found out I wasn’t very good at it and fell back on writing. I instantly fell in love with it. So here I am.

NA: What do your friends and family think about your being a writer?

AA: They have been very supportive! Especially my parents. My mother is always my first beta reader (even with the sexy stuff) and she’s my biggest fan.

NA: The biggest surprise you had after becoming a writer

AA: That making it in this business is not so easy. I really thought that I would be ahead of where I am today, but these things, gathering an audience, making sales, it all takes time. It’s important not to give up though!

NA: Do you outline books ahead of time or are you more of a by-the-seat-of-your-pants writer?

AA: I’m a by-the-seat-of-my-pants writer. I usually have an idea of where things are going, but I mainly just sit my butt down and write. Sometimes, I’ll brainstorm, if I get exceptionally stuck.

NA: Do you have quirky writing habits?

AA: I don’t think it’s quirky, but I like to have specific playlists, specific songs that guide my muse through the story. I also have all the settings on Word to my preference as well.

NA: What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

AA: I’m pretty much always writing…it’s kind of an obsession. But when I make myself take down time between novels, I’m usually researching and watching Jurassic Park over and over again!

NA: Why did you choose the shirt you have on?

AA: It’s a very hot day today, so I needed something light and airy, and it’s my Jurassic Park t-shirt, so it’s a favourite of mine. You can obviously tell there’s a theme that I like Jurassic Park and dinosaurs! Haha.

NA: What errand/chore do you despise the most?

AA: I despise cleaning the bathroom sink! But does the gym count as a chore? I hate that too, but I do that three times a week.

NA: What famous person would you like to have dinner with?

AA: I’d love to have dinner with Henry Cavil! Superman and a candlelit dinner for two, sounds like another novel in the making!

NA: What are you working on now?

AA: I am currently working on Goode Pain 03, Rigged. There will be five in the series, plus a spin-off set of novels, in the same universe, but different characters. Very exciting!

Edgeplay by Annabel Allan

Edgeplay blurb:

By day Ava Goode is in the insurance game, getting her work done and being a model employee. But by night she retreats to her secret world where she dominates those that seek to submit to her.

This private world gets turned upside down the moment she meets Gabriel Burton; a man who is not only successful, but works for her father—and dating men in her father’s office is a big no-no. But, it’s hard to resist your deepest desires, especially when they kneel before you and kiss your feet, like a good boy.

Excerpt:

“Hello,” I said.

He turned, his brilliant brown eyes, the colour of chocolate, staring into me, surprising me. They were deep, beautiful, stunning. I was also hit with his cologne, which again, was manly. It was what I expected, what most men wore, too, but it nearly floored me.

“Well, hello,” he said, his eyes quickly looking me over, taking in the dress.

The woman in red, who happened to also be blonde, sighed as she saw that she lost to the younger woman. She turned and walked away, leaving us to our conversation.

“It seems I’ve saved you from an awkward encounter,” I said, glancing to the older woman, who was now at another young business man’s side.

“Yes, I should thank you,” he replied with a frown as he looked to the other woman.

“No need,” I said, “I’m really over here to cause trouble anyways.”

“You aren’t busy with your boyfriend or husband?” he asked, unsure.

I burst out laughing, shaking my head. “No, no boyfriend, and certainly no husband.”

“Not the marrying type?” he asked.

“Not really the relationship type,” I replied, eyeing him hungrily.

I had let my puppy eat me out twice more on Thursday evening, but I actually hadn’t had sex in almost a year. A lot of people think that BDSM is all about sex, but even with my puppy, he didn’t really expect actual intercourse. He expected me to Dominate him; but of course there was a sexual aspect with him, in denying him his orgasm and such. He wanted to be my puppy and all that it entailed. He didn’t pay me for the pleasure. I met him at a BDSM club and he worked his way up to being allowed to be my puppy.

But, it was also true that though I hadn’t had sex in almost a year, it had been nearly eight years since I had had a relationship. It didn’t interest me.

“Oh,” he said, nodding as he looked to his champagne, his eyes constantly coming back to me. “And what type are you?”

“The casual type,” I said with a little shrug, the heat from his body sinking into me, making me feel drunk almost. I tried to clear my mind, even as I stared into those brilliant brown eyes.

“Casual is good,” he said, faintly smiling, obviously enjoying looking at me.

“I guess I should let you in on a little secret,” I said, leaning into him seductively.

“Oh? What’s that?” he asked, doing the same, playing along.

“I’m breaking the rules,” I said with a little sly smile.

His brow furrowed. “What rules?”

“I’m Ava Goode,” I said, putting out my hand to shake his.

His eyes widened a little bit, his brow high on his head before he cleared his throat, nodding. “I should have recognized you from your picture in your father’s office.”

I winced a little. “Let me guess, my high school graduation photo? My hair is a mass of golden blonde curls?”

He let loose a sexy smile. “Yep, that’s the one.”

“How embarrassing,” I said, as I covered my face a little with my hand. “I’ve asked him a hundred times to get rid of that thing.”

“It’s cute,” he said, looking me up and down. “I’d say that he keeps it as a reminder to his staff that they should see you as his daughter, a little girl, rather than a beautiful young woman that stands before me.”

I felt my cheeks flush warmly, looking to him from under my long lashes, that little smile spreading across my lips. “I believe you’re flirting with me, Mister Burton.”

“I believe you are also guilty of it, Miss Goode,” he said, his eyes ablaze with that hunger I knew all too well. But…something was different. It sent a thrill through me, one I hadn’t felt in a long time.

Oh no, let’s not go there, I thought to myself.
