Linda Burson and Murder Among Friends

Linda, welcome to Nomad Authors!

Murder Among Friends by Linda Burson

NA: How did you come up with the idea for your book?

LB: I used to work for a Private Investigator so the idea stemmed from that. I added some creative licensing and threw in some characters that were a mix of a few people I knew during that time.

NA: What sort of research did you do to write this book?

LB: I visited the areas that I mentioned in the book. I made sure my timelines worked for driving distances between Boston and the town in Connecticut. I also did some brief research regarding law degrees and interrogation techniques.

NA: What is the main thing you want readers to take away from your book?

LB: I just want readers to be entertained, to feel like they are somewhere else and a part of other’s lives for the time they are reading the story. Personally, I love to escape once-in-a-while through books. I hope my novels are escapes for readers and at the end, they are satisfied with their adventure.

NA: Do you have a day job? What was your job before you started writing full time?

LB: Basically, I’m retired for the most part. I ran multiple businesses for many years. The last fifteen years, I owned and operated a computerized embroidery and products promotion business.

NA: What started you on the path to writing?

LB: I’ve always loved writing, from the first writing assignment I was given at the age of eight. I never stopped. I used to write stories for fun while other kids were complaining about writing.

Finally, after a serious bout of breast cancer, and losing my best friend to the same disease, I decided it was time to do what I loved the most…that life was too short to put everything else ahead of what was in my heart. So, I sat down one day and began my full-time writing journey.

NA: What do your friends and family think about your being a writer?

LB: I think for the most part they are proud of me…proud that I actually made this commitment and stuck with it. Most of the time, no one makes any comments about it. Maybe it’s just because it’s a part of who I am so they figured nothing needs to be said; I’m not sure. I guess they think of it as my normal job, just like they all have regular jobs. I suppose if I became a NY Times bestselling author or something similar, or if a producer wanted to make a movie from one of my novels, then they may make mention of it and make a bigger deal about it. As of now, none of my family members even read my books as far as I know. Most friends, though, will usually ask how I’m doing with the writing.

NA: Do you outline books ahead of time or are you more of a by-the-seat-of-your-pants writer?

LB: I’m definitely a panster. I get as comfortable as I can and start writing what’s in my head. Eventually, though, I jot down information so I can keep it all straight in my mind. I don’t want to have a character with green eyes and wavy hair in Chapter 1 and then have it change in Chapter 20. I want to keep track of other traits, etc. as well and that goes for spellings of names.

NA: What has been one of your most rewarding experiences as an author?

LB: Meeting so many wonderful authors on social media. It is a much bigger community than I ever realized. There are many that are kind, thoughtful, and helpful. They don’t see themselves in competition with you, but as a colleague. Not ALL OF THEM are this way, but most of the ones I associate with the most, definitely are terrific.

An author not promoting another author is not only sad, but ridiculous. Think about it…if a book is really good and you love it, you can read it in one night! I do this all the time. In this case, you could literally read seven books a week. Okay, not normal, but possible. The point I’m trying to make is, we can read many, many books from a variety of authors and still want to read more and more. There’s no reason to feel intimidated or jealous of another. Of course we want to be successful, but recommending another’s book if you enjoyed it, should be easy to do.

NA: What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

LB: If I’m not writing a book, I’m editing one, or reading another. I spend many hours marketing and promoting my work, and I put a newsletter together once a month. Right now, my assistant and I are working on revamping the first book in my MARCY SERIES. If that goes well, we may continue with the others in the series.

I make sure I work out with a fitness trainer a couple times a week to stay fit and healthy. Sometimes, I need to get out and take a drive to clear my mind. This is when I recharge so I may return home and continue the writing process. I’m also a new grandmother, so if there is any time available to visit my new gorgeous granddaughter, I will do that in a heartbeat.

NA: What are your top three favorite books of all time?

LB: This is a difficult question. I don’t know how anyone can answer this question. Usually, my favorite book is the one I’m reading at the moment. Of course, I do like some books better than others, but there are so many novels out there, I couldn’t pick just three. I don’t even think I’ve read my top three favorite books as of yet. I haven’t read enough to answer this question.

NA: What’s one of your pet peeves?

LB: I have a few pet peeves. One of my biggest, and it stems from being an author, is the way some people write reviews. When someone bashes another’s hard work and livelihood, it would be nice if they would be specific about why they bashed it.

If a reader has a problem with a book they’ve read because they don’t believe in a certain behavior, that doesn’t mean the book was bad. They’re taking a personal opinion about a lifestyle and using it against the author.

I may not like BDSM, but if the story is well-written, has a great story-line, is edited well, flows, and has no plot holes, etc.; it’s a good book and deserves a good rating. Just because I don’t live my life that way, doesn’t mean I give a bad review because I don’t believe in it. I’ve seen people do this time and time again.

I just don’t get it. If you don’t like the subject of a book, don’t read it! I hate to end a story crying my eyes out; however, I read a book last year that put me into a deep depression because it was so sad. Did I give it a bad review? NO!! It was a phenomenal story. I don’t like to have a sad ending, but that’s a personal preference. It was still a fantastic book. Of course I could go on about other topics people might not believe in — drug addicts, plural relationships, having children out of wedlock…blah, blah, blah. It’s called fiction for a reason. Unless there are multiple errors and the story is rushed or inconsistent, I don’t see giving it one or two stars because — well, because I didn’t like the fact that the woman in the story cheated on her husband.

NA: Why did you choose the shirt you have on?

LB: I normally choose something for comfort. Of course, I love to look good in it — hopefully thinner LOL — however, comfort is always my first thought.

NA: What errand/chore do you despise the most?

LB: I’m not fond of grocery shopping, believe it or not. I know most people don’t understand this, but I just don’t enjoy it. Of course, I love food. I don’t even mind preparing meals occasionally, but going to the store? I’d rather not!

NA: What famous person would you like to have dinner with?

LB: Since this is kind-of a fantasy question, I think I’ll reply with a fantasy answer. Instead of a famous person, I’d love to have dinner with my entire maternal-side from generations back. If I could get all the grandparents way back to the great-great-great-great grandparents on my mother’s parents side; it would be incredible!

NA: What are you working on now?

LB: I’ve just completed another romantic suspense book that I’m almost finished editing. I’m still working on a women’s fiction story that I started about a year ago, and I’m in the process of revamping the first book in my MARCY SERIES called, RAGE.

NA: If I could spend time writing anywhere in the world, where would I choose to go?

LB: I would love to visit a historical castle somewhere in England, Ireland, or Scotland. A large castle that had a wonderful old library with the most perfect desk to place my laptop, a comfortable chair to sit, and a roaring fireplace for those chilly days and nights; and as my muse, enough property and gardens to roam for hours. Of course, there would need to be a staff so I don’t have to break my concentration by preparing meals, drinks, and snacks. What a perfect dream! [NA: You’d hear my knocking at the castle gates!]

Murder Among Friends blurb:
Emotionally and mentally, Camille Thurston has had it. She needs a rest from her high- pressure job and Boston’s energetic lifestyle. A sabbatical at her brother Zach’s Connecticut home seems like the perfect change of scenery. Little does she know that even in a small town, she can’t escape the intensity of her profession.

A woman is reported missing. Zach and his partner, Russ Nolan, are on the case, and Camille with her own background in private investigation decides she can’t sit by idly. However, things become complicated when she becomes involved not only with the case, but with the family of the missing woman.

Excerpt:
As Frank parks, Cammy sees what she’s guessing to be her brother’s unmarked police vehicle coming toward her. The headlights are bright and are blinding her. When they turn off the lights, she confirms in her mind that it’s him and Russ.

She climbs out of her car. Zach doesn’t stand on formality. He walks right over to her and gives her a big hug. “You always scare me to death, sis.”

“Sorry, Zachary; it’s my fault. Hello there. I’m Frank Dees. I drove her like the escaping bank robber.”

“Frank, it’s great to meet you Thank you for bringing her. I really appreciate it.”

“No thanks necessary, Zach. She wasn’t gettin’ away from me unless she performed magic and disappeared into thin air.”

“I’m so happy to hear you say that. I’m already calming down. This is my partner, Russ Nolan. Russ, Cam’s boss, Frank Dees, retired decorated police officer.”

“You can leave out the decorated part,” Frank says as he shakes hands with Russ.

“No sir. You earned it and deserve the recognition. It’s an honor to meet you. Thank you for taking such good care of my sister. She worries me.”

“She’s damn good at what she does, Zach. Believe me. I’m more than proud of her.”

“That’s great to hear coming from you, Frank.” Zach notes. “Well, let’s go inside and get this over with.”

“Zach, please let me go in first.”

“Cam, you know I can’t let you tell him. You’re not even supposed to be here.”

“I know. I won’t say anything. Just let him see me first.”

“Alright.”

“Let’s stay quiet and get off the street before the whole neighborhood comes out,” Cam whispers.

“Good idea, Cam,” Frank agrees.

They all walk up to Grant’s front door. Cam tells Zach not to ring the bell. It’s not the quietest and Grant’s bedroom is in the front of the house. He’ll most likely hear the knock. This way they won’t take a chance of waking Austin or disturbing the neighbors. Zach taps on the door a few times. There’s no answer.
“Here Zach, let me, please,” Cam whispers.
He gives her a frustrated look, then he nods his approval. Cammy knocks three times, pauses, knocks twice, pauses, and then knocks four times. She repeats this process about ten seconds later. This is when she can see the hall light up the stairs go on through the glass in the door. She knows he heard.
He darts down the stairs. She can see his shadow. She’s certain he knows it’s her. She knows she’s about to see a huge disappointment on his face when he looks behind her. She’s shaking. Her palms are sweating and her hands are fidgeting. Those three nervous signs she can’t control.
Grant hurriedly opens the front door. “Cam,” he shouts with a large smile. When he sees the three men with her, as if on remote control, the smile is gone.
Grant steps back. After looking at Zach, Russ, and Frank, he goes back to staring at Cammy.
“Well, it’s obvious something’s not right, and I’m guessing it has to do with Paula. What’d you find out?” He directs his questions to Cammy.
Zach speaks. “Grant, we believe we found your wife.”
Grant’s eyes widen and his breathing is ragged. He raises his right hand and pushes it through his hair. Cammy knows his nervous idiosyncrasies, but she’s hoping she’s the only one. She can see his hands tremble, but it’s only a slight movement. She notes Frank is watching him, but Russ and Zach are concentrating on his face.

WOW! Edgeplay and Annabel Allan

Annabel is new to Black Velvet Seductions, but she’s coming on board with a bang! I’m interested to learn more about her and her new book, Edgeplay.

Edgeplay by Anabel Allan

NA: How did you come up with the idea for your book?

AA: I became interested in BDSM when I read the Wicked Lovers series by Shayla Black. I thought to myself, I can do this! And what fun it has been writing in the genre.

NA: What is the main thing you want readers to take away from your book?

AA: That a woman can be powerful and sexy. She can be Dominant and take control of her own sexual desires. I want to empower women, as well as show that men can be submissive and powerful in their own right as well.

NA: A fun fact about writing your book.

AA: I actually started out with the main character as a man! I then switched it when it wasn’t working for the story. Now we have Ava Goode, and she’s here to stay!

NA: What started you on the path to writing?

AA: I actually started out in film school, with aspirations of being a director. I then found out I wasn’t very good at it and fell back on writing. I instantly fell in love with it. So here I am.

NA: What do your friends and family think about your being a writer?

AA: They have been very supportive! Especially my parents. My mother is always my first beta reader (even with the sexy stuff) and she’s my biggest fan.

NA: The biggest surprise you had after becoming a writer

AA: That making it in this business is not so easy. I really thought that I would be ahead of where I am today, but these things, gathering an audience, making sales, it all takes time. It’s important not to give up though!

NA: Do you outline books ahead of time or are you more of a by-the-seat-of-your-pants writer?

AA: I’m a by-the-seat-of-my-pants writer. I usually have an idea of where things are going, but I mainly just sit my butt down and write. Sometimes, I’ll brainstorm, if I get exceptionally stuck.

NA: Do you have quirky writing habits?

AA: I don’t think it’s quirky, but I like to have specific playlists, specific songs that guide my muse through the story. I also have all the settings on Word to my preference as well.

NA: What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

AA: I’m pretty much always writing…it’s kind of an obsession. But when I make myself take down time between novels, I’m usually researching and watching Jurassic Park over and over again!

NA: Why did you choose the shirt you have on?

AA: It’s a very hot day today, so I needed something light and airy, and it’s my Jurassic Park t-shirt, so it’s a favourite of mine. You can obviously tell there’s a theme that I like Jurassic Park and dinosaurs! Haha.

NA: What errand/chore do you despise the most?

AA: I despise cleaning the bathroom sink! But does the gym count as a chore? I hate that too, but I do that three times a week.

NA: What famous person would you like to have dinner with?

AA: I’d love to have dinner with Henry Cavil! Superman and a candlelit dinner for two, sounds like another novel in the making!

NA: What are you working on now?

AA: I am currently working on Goode Pain 03, Rigged. There will be five in the series, plus a spin-off set of novels, in the same universe, but different characters. Very exciting!

Edgeplay by Annabel Allan

Edgeplay blurb:

By day Ava Goode is in the insurance game, getting her work done and being a model employee. But by night she retreats to her secret world where she dominates those that seek to submit to her.

This private world gets turned upside down the moment she meets Gabriel Burton; a man who is not only successful, but works for her father—and dating men in her father’s office is a big no-no. But, it’s hard to resist your deepest desires, especially when they kneel before you and kiss your feet, like a good boy.

Excerpt:

“Hello,” I said.

He turned, his brilliant brown eyes, the colour of chocolate, staring into me, surprising me. They were deep, beautiful, stunning. I was also hit with his cologne, which again, was manly. It was what I expected, what most men wore, too, but it nearly floored me.

“Well, hello,” he said, his eyes quickly looking me over, taking in the dress.

The woman in red, who happened to also be blonde, sighed as she saw that she lost to the younger woman. She turned and walked away, leaving us to our conversation.

“It seems I’ve saved you from an awkward encounter,” I said, glancing to the older woman, who was now at another young business man’s side.

“Yes, I should thank you,” he replied with a frown as he looked to the other woman.

“No need,” I said, “I’m really over here to cause trouble anyways.”

“You aren’t busy with your boyfriend or husband?” he asked, unsure.

I burst out laughing, shaking my head. “No, no boyfriend, and certainly no husband.”

“Not the marrying type?” he asked.

“Not really the relationship type,” I replied, eyeing him hungrily.

I had let my puppy eat me out twice more on Thursday evening, but I actually hadn’t had sex in almost a year. A lot of people think that BDSM is all about sex, but even with my puppy, he didn’t really expect actual intercourse. He expected me to Dominate him; but of course there was a sexual aspect with him, in denying him his orgasm and such. He wanted to be my puppy and all that it entailed. He didn’t pay me for the pleasure. I met him at a BDSM club and he worked his way up to being allowed to be my puppy.

But, it was also true that though I hadn’t had sex in almost a year, it had been nearly eight years since I had had a relationship. It didn’t interest me.

“Oh,” he said, nodding as he looked to his champagne, his eyes constantly coming back to me. “And what type are you?”

“The casual type,” I said with a little shrug, the heat from his body sinking into me, making me feel drunk almost. I tried to clear my mind, even as I stared into those brilliant brown eyes.

“Casual is good,” he said, faintly smiling, obviously enjoying looking at me.

“I guess I should let you in on a little secret,” I said, leaning into him seductively.

“Oh? What’s that?” he asked, doing the same, playing along.

“I’m breaking the rules,” I said with a little sly smile.

His brow furrowed. “What rules?”

“I’m Ava Goode,” I said, putting out my hand to shake his.

His eyes widened a little bit, his brow high on his head before he cleared his throat, nodding. “I should have recognized you from your picture in your father’s office.”

I winced a little. “Let me guess, my high school graduation photo? My hair is a mass of golden blonde curls?”

He let loose a sexy smile. “Yep, that’s the one.”

“How embarrassing,” I said, as I covered my face a little with my hand. “I’ve asked him a hundred times to get rid of that thing.”

“It’s cute,” he said, looking me up and down. “I’d say that he keeps it as a reminder to his staff that they should see you as his daughter, a little girl, rather than a beautiful young woman that stands before me.”

I felt my cheeks flush warmly, looking to him from under my long lashes, that little smile spreading across my lips. “I believe you’re flirting with me, Mister Burton.”

“I believe you are also guilty of it, Miss Goode,” he said, his eyes ablaze with that hunger I knew all too well. But…something was different. It sent a thrill through me, one I hadn’t felt in a long time.

Oh no, let’s not go there, I thought to myself.

Excerpt from Bedeviled:
Keeping his mind on the topic always took all of Alex’s effort anyway. When Charlotte sat hip-to-hip with him as she had today, he felt the heat of her skin, saw the long length of thigh exposed in front of him, heard her heavy post-run breathing until he was in sensory overload. She smelled so good, not stinky and sweaty like he must. She smelled classy and expensive with all those clean, floral scents. She smelled like a woman he could trust.
More like a woman I want to trust.
Thinking back, Alex recognized that she had been hiding something all along. When he wasn’t lost in a sensual fog, he was able to zero in on where the conversations lagged, when she got testy with his probing or tried to change the subject. It had something to do with her life in Boston before she moved to Chicago and it was something that had been going on for a while. She was practiced at her excuses by the time she used them on him. She was making too many trips back East for ‘Harvard stuff.’ She had met Regan Howe through this same ‘Harvard stuff’ yet Regan went back to her alma mater only once or twice a year, if that.
Oh yeah, Charlotte is definitely up to something and I intend to find out what. I have been patient long enough.
Sitting waiting now for Charlotte to arrive at Starbucks, Alex promised himself that he would get to the bottom of this or walk away.
Since she had declined his offer of a ride, Alex currently sat at a shady outside table enjoying the last of summer, waiting for her to walk over and speculating on her possible secrets. He was planning his subtle interrogation during the few minutes Charlotte would need to make her way across the park,
Stubborn. She should have just accepted the ride.
You driving over or walking?” she had asked him, once they caught their breath.
“I have the car if you want a ride?” When she hesitated, he tried tempting her. “I have the new car.”
Alex was the proud owner of a brand new Mercedes AMG. The sleek, luxury sports car suited him despite most people’s image of him as logical, conservative and staid. The need for speed was actually deep in his blood. “You will love it, tight on the curves, fast and quiet. She purrs,” he had bragged.
Charlotte hesitated on his last remark and Alex had been sure she would accept. “The new car, huh?” she sounded intrigued. “I am excited to see it at last, Alex. You have certainly been talking about it long enough.”
“I need to walk off this tight hamstring, so I’ll have to pass this time,” she had replied reluctantly. “Meet you there in five.” Of course, Charlotte had been Charlotte, and that included being unpredictable.
Charlotte, leaving Alex standing there, had taken off across the park without a backward glance. Alex stood dumbfounded a moment, watching her slow jog-walk toward the trail across the grassy lawns of Lincoln Park. She was heading directly toward their usual post-run Starbucks and if he didn’t get moving, she would be there first.
Still he stood, willing her to look back and flash him that smile that changed her whole face. She didn’t, of course, and Alex was left standing there, admiring her lithe figure and the smooth bunch and release of her muscles in those tiny running shorts as she moved into the distance. Reminding himself to close his gaping mouth, Alex jogged to the parking lot, trading an extra moment of admiring a beautiful woman for a few short moments admiring his beautiful new car.
Arriving at the coffee shop several minutes before Charlotte, Alex was forced to cool his heels. He spent the time piecing together anything he could think of to uncover Charlotte’s deep, dark, secret. Admittedly, he needed the ten-minute head start away from her to give his overheated blood a little cooling time too. He kept envisioning the two of them in that sweet ride, sitting close with their sweat-slicked bodies. The image had intensified the jolts of.electricity already coursing through his veins from running beside her scantily clothed body.
Too bad she turned me down. One of these days we will be in tight quarters, all alone, and I will make my move. I have resisted too long already.
Since the mention of her tight hamstring, all Alex could think about was massaging her leg, and moving up from there. Did the woman not understand what she was doing to him? After all, he was a healthy red-blooded man. How long was he supposed to watch her round little ass wiggle in front of him, or the glide of muscles in those incredible legs – or OMG – her breasts bob up and down in those little running tops. The woman was killing him. He wanted her so badly he could taste it.
He chided himself to stop thinking of her that way, as he always did when he lusted after her. He would catch himself wanting her and repress the overwhelming sexual response that had plagued him since the beginning. She was so much more than just beautiful and sexy. She was a brilliant woman, funny, witty, complex and delightful. She considered him a running partner, and a friend…
…but that body, oh, that body. Stop it!
Alex determined to stay focused on what she might be trying to cover up and got his desire under control. He reviewed the signs – when she changed topics or failed to make eye contact. He carefully dissected her words while he waited for her to arrive. He knew she was being intentionally elusive. Alex resolved again that today would be the day he found out what she was concealing, beginning as soon as she arrived.
Speaking of arriving, Charlotte should have shown up long before now. She would have, unless something had happened. How long had he been sitting, pondering? How much time had passed?
Heart racing like a freight train, Alex ran into the park. Unsure why, he was terrified of what he might find.

The fabulous Alice Renaud and Music for a Merman!

Alice Renaud is funny, talented, a supportive friend, and a wonderful writer. Jan and I loved her new book, Music for a Merman! Music for a Merman is Book 2 in Alice’s Sea of Love romance series, and is on pre-release sale right now. You might also like to read Alice’s interview for A Merman’s Choice, Book 1 in the Sea of Love series.

Music for a Merman by Alice Renaud

Interview:

NA: How did you come up with the idea for your book?
AR: I grew up in Brittany, western France, in a village by the sea. I return there most summers. As in other seaside resorts, the local policemen double up as lifeguards. So they could be breaking up a riot in the morning and rescuing swimmers in the afternoon. I thought it would be fun to write a romance with such a cop-lifeguard as hero. But then I turned away from contemporary romance and started writing fantasy romance instead. After writing the first book in my Sea of Love series, A Merman’s Choice, I was casting around for characters for my second book. I remembered the lifeguards on the beach who were also cops, and the idea of Rob Regor came to me. A shape shifting merman who is also a policeman. Then I imagined him arresting a woman and falling in love with her, and Charlie, the heroine, was born.

NA: What sort of research did you do to write this book?
AR: Rob is a cop and arrests Charlie. I don’t have any personal experience of that situation, so I had to do research on what happens when someone is arrested and spends the night in a cell. I am indebted to my critique partner who watches a lot of cop shows, and helped me correct a lot of inaccuracies!

NA: A fun fact about writing your book.
AR: The scene where Rob and Charlie first make love is the hottest scene I’ve written so far. He’s in his aquatic (merman) shape, so I had to think through how different he would be from a human, and how Charlie would react to that. She quite likes it, as it turns out, but you’ll have to read the book to find out more!

NA: Do you have a day job? What was your job before you started writing full time?
AR: I work full time as compliance officer for a pharmaceutical company, which couldn’t be more different from the stuff I write. I like it that way – I escape from one world into another, and back again. When someone at work really annoys me, I imagine them as a monster in one of my books. It helps. It does mean I don’t have as much time to write as I would like though.

NA: What do your friends and family think about your being a writer?
AR: Most of my friends are a bit puzzled by it, but generally supportive. My husband is magnificently supportive, without him I couldn’t do any of it.

NA: The biggest surprise you had after becoming a writer
AR: I am amazed by how supportive other authors are. It’s wonderful, I feel I have joined a community of friends and I am so grateful to all my author friends, especially the other BVS authors, like Dee and Jan!

NA: What has been one of your most rewarding experiences as an author?
AR: Hearing from a reader that they have loved my book, or getting a good review. It is such a wonderful feeling to know that my stories are enjoyed by people who could be on the other side of the world.

NA: Do you have quirky writing habits?
AR: I can’t write without tea, and it’s got to be the strong stuff. Yorkshire Gold is my favourite. It’s so dark, the teabag turns the water the colour of mahogany after 2 seconds. It’s what we call in the UK “builder’s tea.” It has to be in my Harry Potter mug, not because I draw inspiration from J. K. Rowling’s creations, but because it’s the only one big enough. It’s almost half a pint.

NA: What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
AR: Reading, and watching TV, particularly historical and fantasy shows. I also love birdwatching, and going to parks. Regent’s Park in London is my favourite. My son likes feeding the ducks, swans and geese.

NA: Why did you choose the shirt you have on?
AR: It was clean, partially ironed, and sort of went with the blue trousers I’d already selected.

NA: What errand/chore do you despise the most?
AR: I don’t like shopping for clothes, especially trousers. I hardly ever wear skirts or dresses, but I’m very short so no trousers ever fit, they all have to be shortened. I only shop for trousers once or twice a year, I take my mum and we go for tea and cake afterwards, that way it’s bearable.

NA: Strangest place you’ve brushed your teeth?
AR: The beach, after staying up all night on New Year’s Eve to watch the sun rise over the sea. These days I’m usually asleep before the fireworks start.

NA: What are you working on now?
AR: I am working on the third book in the Sea of Love series, Mermaids Marry in Green. It’s about a feisty mermaid called Caltha, who travels to London to help a warlock save the city from a water monster. Of course, she falls in love with him! I would also like to write more short stories. I have a short story in the BVS supernatural romance anthology Mystic Desire, which is on pre order now. The story, The Sweetest Magic of All, is about an apprentice witch and a hot warlock who go back in time to locate a magical amulet, and find more than they bargained for! It was great fun to write.

NA: What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
AR: The heroine, Charlie, is sassy and confident, more so than the heroine of my first book. I enjoyed writing her and her banter, and her sexually charged relationship with Rob. I think my heroines are getting spunkier and spunkier – Caltha, in my third book, is properly kick-ass!

Music for a Merman by Alice Renaud

Music for a Merman blurb:
Rob Regor knew that humans were trouble. All the shape shifting mermen of the Morvann Islands knew it. And human women were double trouble… especially when they were lying on the road in front of a digger.
Rob has a mission. Go to the mainland. Work as a policeman. Spy on humans. Report back to his father, the head of the Regor Merman Clan. It should be easy. Until he has to arrest Charlie. Rob can’t fight his attraction to the sexy eco-warrior, and it puts him on one hell of a collision course with his family and his Clan. Will he break the rules – or break her heart, and his?

Love ‘em and leave ‘em, that was Charlie’s motto. It had served her well until now. But Rob is different… Can she open up her heart to Rob – when a secret buried in her past surfaces and changes her completely?

Excerpt:

Music for a Merman by Alice RenaudCharlie clambered over the rocks and was soon looking down at the small cove, sparkling blue and gold under the descending sun. The haunting song grew louder the closer she got to the sea. Now it seemed to be outside her head, rising from the peaceful water below to weave its magic around her. The meaning shimmered, just beyond the edge of her comprehension. It was like trying to read words reflected in a mirror. If she could only break the surface of the glass, enter the other side, she’d understand it fully.

But in some obscure way, she knew that the melody spoke of love. Sexual, passionate love. And it was doing something to her. Heat was building up, deep inside her belly. She swore, in a vain attempt to let it out. “Bloody Rob!” He’d got her all worked up, and now she couldn’t calm down.

Cold water and exercise would help. She half-climbed, half-slid down the slippery rocks and hit the sand with a thud. The music sounded as though it was coming from the waves.

It couldn’t be. Maybe the stress of the past day had given her tinnitus. She’d read about it. People heard noises, or even melodies, in their head, and couldn’t get rid of them. She took off her shorts and T-shirt and placed them on a rock, weighing them down with her sandals. After a moment’s hesitation, she took off her swimsuit too. No one would see her, and she loved skinny-dipping. Nothing would come between her and the sea tonight.

The breeze glided across her body but failed to soothe the persistent thrumming at the apex of her thighs. She stepped into the surf, bracing herself for the usual Atlantic chill, but it didn’t come. The water was warm, almost like the Mediterranean. She immersed herself up to her neck. Joy broke through her gloom and lifted her mood just as a wave lifted her and bore her towards the small wooded island in the middle of the cove. A few lazy strokes were all she needed to stay afloat. The water enveloped her in its embrace, stroking her from her shoulders to her toes, as if the whole ocean wanted to make love to her.

The eerie song was growing louder and clearer by the minute. With an almighty jolt she understood that it was real. She wasn’t hallucinating. The enchanting melody was coming from the other side of the islet! Excitement surged, short-circuiting all other emotions. Something was there, just beyond her sight. Something beautiful and magical.

She swam up to the island and followed the sandy shore towards the heavenly sound. Some deep, mysterious instinct told her that she had nothing to fear from this being. It meant her no harm. Quite the contrary.

Luck was on her side. A fallen tree, half submerged in the water, provided the perfect cover. The anticipation blazed so high inside her, it made her mouth go dry. She grabbed the trunk and hauled herself up to peep through the branches.

A black, glistening animal swam in circles, just a few yards away. A porpoise? But the shape was wrong. A fin broke the surface. No, not a fin, an arm! Coal-black and muscular, it ended in a hand.

A webbed hand.

Astonishment sucked the air out of her lungs. Her hands shook and she Music for a Merman by Alice Renaudalmost lost her grip on the trunk. She clutched the wood so hard that a splinter drove into her finger, drawing blood, but she didn’t feel any pain. She could only stare, and listen, as the fantastical being moved through the water and poured his soul out in a stream of music.

A merman! The old legends were true. Here was the Water Horse, the Selkie, the aquatic creature that could turn into a man.

Forget about “out there.” The truth is HERE! #MFRWauthor

I’ve always thought I have a good imagination, but when it comes to things like inventions, I really don’t. I leave that kind of thinking to Hubby. So I asked him about this blog topic last night and heAliens land on earth came up with what I think would be a perfect invention: the DEESKNIGHT SPACE ALIEN DETECTOR.

The name has a nice ring, no? Anyway, many of us remember that TV show The X Files that always assured us that “The truth is out there.” Well, Hubby has his own truth we call the Alien Theory. He thinks the earth was partially populated by aliens who came here and dropped off their criminals. Kind of like Great Britain and Australia. And so, to him, space aliens have lived here among us for thousands of years. He thinks it’s about time we knew who they are. Thus, the DEESKNIGHT SPACE ALIEN DETECTOR.

Once we know which of us is an alien and which is human, we can go aboutPeace between humans and aliens truly making peace in the universe. They can say, “We come in peace. Take us to your leader.” And we can say, “Welcome to our planet. Did you bring space gold?” Maybe all the strive in the world is due to innate conflict between aliens/humans that could be solved if we just knew who was who. So I’m for this invention idea. Anyone out there want to invest?

Through the Veil—Jan Selbourne in Mystic Desire

Why are we always intrigued by love stories that seem to span time and space, held back by nothing on our physical plane? Because that’s the way true love is supposed to be, what we want it to be. What would you do to capture a love like that? Would you go through the veil?

I love this tale of how the past often haunts us for a very good reason! Read Through the Veil and other supernatural stories from some very talented authors in Mystic Desire. Available on pre-order until October 1 for 99 cents!

Mystic Desire A Supernatural Anthology

Through the Veil – Jan Selbourne
A beautiful March day in 1875 ends in tragedy when the wagon carrying Helen and Marcus plunges down the mountainside. Generations pass before Rachel Finlay finds an old sepia photo of a man and woman. She knows them but she’s never met them and now, for the peace of mind she desperately craves, she goes back to where it began. In time, through the veil, knowing she may never return.

Through the Veil--Jan Selbourne

Jan, Why did you write this story for the Mystic Desire anthology?
When BVS asked for submissions to this anthology, my first thought was ‘Not my genre, I’m a historical fiction author.’ After some not so gentle nudging from my friend and author Dee S. Knight and author Callie Carmen, I thought ‘Why not?’ And I do, sort of, believe in reincarnation. Through the Veil started with an idea and it went from there.

Is there anything in Rachel’s story that strikes home with you personally?
Through the Veil is set in my home state, New South Wales, Australia. The towns mentioned in this story are real, even the ghost town, Dalmorton, where Rachel ‘sees it’ as the thriving gold mining town it once was. It was very satisfying to put my characters on the Great Dividing Range in 1875 and send Rachel on the trip back up the old Glen Innes road in 2019 to find the truth.

Do you normally write short stories? What did you find fun or difficult Through the Veil--Jan Selbourneabout writing this one?
This is my first short story and at first, I was worried about writing a plot within the word count guidelines. However, once I started it was fun and very enjoyable.

Please provide a short bio and your social media links.
Jan Selbourne was born and educated in Melbourne, Australia and her love of literature and history began as soon as she learned to read and hold a pen. After graduating from a Melbourne Business College her career began in the dusty world of ledgers and accounting, working in Victoria, Queensland and the United Kingdom. On the point of retiring, she changed course to work as secretary of a large NSW historical society. Now retired Jan is enjoying her love of travelling and literature. She has two children, a stray live in cat and lives near Maitland, New South Wales

Series Description:

She’s faking her amnesia to fool a very real killer.

False Memory by Meli RaineFALSE MEMORY (Book 1)
Release Date: August 15, 2019
Ebook and Audio Available

It all started with the bereavement flowers with my name on them.

Not the best way to wake up, right? I work in a flower shop. I know a funeral arrangement when I see one.

I know a killer when I see one, too. And one is standing in my hospital room right now, straight behind the man who saved my life.

I can’t tell anyone the truth, because that’s the fastest way to really die. So I do the next best thing. I “lose” my memory.

I fake my amnesia.

Pretending not to remember a brutal attempted murder has its perks. The killer is backing down, spending less time around me, loosening the noose.

The less I claim to recall, the more my rescuer, Duff, works to help me “remember.” I hate lying to him.

But he doesn’t understand that my memory is dangerous. To me. And to him.

Fooling everyone isn’t easy. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done.

Except it’s starting to look like I’ve been fooling myself.

In more ways than one.

The False Series by Meli Raine

Excerpt from False Start:

My nose fills with a sudden blast of fresh roses that aren’t really there. This happens sometimes, where my senses get jumbled and confused. Memory comes back to me in the form of a tingling arm, a sudden flash of light, a scent that reminds me of the past.

Emotion swells like a balloon in my chest as I miss the flower shop, miss greeting customers, miss the tacky feel of florist’s tape all over my fingerpads, miss the normalcy I never appreciated.

My past self was so naïve.

And that’s how my present self should be, too.

Grief sucks all the oxygen out of my lungs at the exact moment that Romeo and Duff approach me, the onslaught of their presence and my depletion too much. Being hollow around them is no big deal.

Being emotional? That’s not safe. Can’t pretend when I can’t control myself.

Time Travel? I don’t think so! #MFRWauthor

Time TravelI’m not a big one for the idea of time travel. Don’t get me wrong, I love history and the future intrigues me. But one step wrong in the past and I might not be around for the future. Am I right? And going into the future, I might learn a few things I wish I hadn’t found out. It would be very hard to live in the moment if you knew what the next moment was going to bring. Nope. Not in favor of time travel.

But…

If I could travel, I’d set the Time Machine for 1781, Yorktown, Virginia. Yes, all the glory for the American strike for freedom is given to Philadelphia and the writers/signers of the Declaration of Independence, but the final battle of the war and the surrender, took place in Yorktown.

Mind you, I’d stay in the Time Machine because that area of Virginia, runSurrender to General Washington in Yorktown, Virginia through with rivers and near the shores of the Chesapeake Bay, was rife with malaria. In fact, malaria did as good a job fighting for the new country of America as the soldiers. Half of the British army had been struck down with the disease, whereas the American army, having mostly grown up in the region, had immunity. I would love to see the surrender of General Cornwallis to General Washington, and to feel the enormity of our accomplishment. A small, upstart country with a generally ragtag army of farmers, had beaten the premier nation in the world. We had beaten the King.

Revolutionary War cannonballIn current time, I’ve walked the battlements of Yorktown. I saw where the cannon were placed, where our forces and the French bombarded the British, and where the Brits fought back gallantly but without success. I could imagine the cannon fire being heard in nearby Williamsburg, and I’ve walked those streets, too. That part of Virginia is filled with history, and you can’t help but feel it as you stroll the cobblestones of Duke of Gloucester Street or stand on the battlements facing the York River.

For better or worse, that’s as close as I will get to the actual battle and surrender. I’m glad it happened, glad we won our freedom, and glad that so much of the history is preserved for current and future generations to experience, if only a little bit.

I’m looking a little sheepish here, because I have to be true to myself. Battles, schmattles, let’s not forget that happiest of places in our tour of history, the gift shop! And that’s all I’m gonna say.
