5 Reasons Why “Moon River” is My Theme Song #MFRWauthor

Moon River in Savannah, GAEver since I first heard “Moon River” by Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer, I’ve been in love with it. It’s definitely my theme song and here’s why.

  1. I’ve always had wander lust. Hubby and I at one time had six addresses in two years. Every two years now I’m ready to pack up and move somewhere new. “Moon River” defines wanderlust to me—but only with the one I love.
  2. Mancini’s melody evokes a kind of laid back slow lifestyle where summer is long and the days are lazy. Just the kind of life a Southern girl appreciates.
  3. Johnny Mercer’s genius lyrics lead one to think of dreams and the longing to complete them. Andy Williams, my all time favorite singer, brought the words and melody to life.
  4. I requested that “Moon River” be played at our wedding to denote the kindDreaming couple of life hubby and I planned. We’ve lived the life we wanted (and still are!), and no song represents us more than this one.
  5. The song never fails to make me a little melancholy, a little wistful, a lot happy.

Have you never heard “Moon River”? Here’s a link to one of the best voices in music singing one of the best songs. Enjoy!

Excerpt from Besotted:

Regan was just too damn alluring in that dress for him to accept that he couldn’t have her if he wanted her.

He was an idiot. He should have told her years ago. He should have told everyone. Despite the tongue- lashing he was silently giving himself, Tyler was certainly no fool. “The professor” to his friends, he was generally serious and professional. He had the smarts necessary to obtain both an MBA and a law degree, and he was now CEO of LHRE and on hiatus from one of the fastest growing tech companies in the country. He kept his cool in general, but again and again he behaved like an idiot around Regan.

Since that damn frog almost thirty years ago, he had loved no one but Regan. Sometimes they made it work together, like in high school, but most times not. His feelings were unchanged, but something always stopped him from declaring his love and asking her to do the same. This time it was something insurmountable.
And yet Tyler couldn’t stay away. He was the proverbial moth to the flame, flirting with disaster every time he flirted with her. He had promised to stay away, to keep her safe,but the attraction was undeniable. Yep, prize idiot.

Returning to the ballroom after the latest threats, Tyler briefly considered sharing the conversation, coming clean with Regan and perhaps moving their relationship forward. He was at a fork in the road but remained silent, Tyler knew he was on the wrong path but couldn’t summon the will to fix it. Not only were his problems unsolveable, but she was involved with Brandon. Tyler felt hopeless.

He was preoccupied just as Regan accused, but Tyler tried to give Regan the attention she deserved. He failed miserably until Regan suggested they just leave. That got his attention. Who knew when he would hold her in his arms again.
“Come dance with me again. It would be a crime to waste that dress.”

Encircling Regan in his arms, his body responded to her nearness, even as his mind worried over the earlier texts. He was unaware of his hand stroking her back, fingers lightly skimming over her bare skin. He wasn’t thinking clearly when he pulled her close or when he dropped kisses on her hair. He wasn’t paying attention, just acting on instinct, Regan was responding, her breath growing uneven, her hands clinging to his shoulders.

About The Redemption of the Shrew:

Nothing is more painful than rejection—particularly when completely naked!

Gloriana Warren doesn’t want to wait for marriage. Beneath her shrewish exterior is a kindhearted woman who uses her fortune for good. It doesn’t matter that the man she’s set her sights on claims impoverishment. She’s in love and determined to marry him. But her attempt at a moonlight seduction ends in disaster.

French marquis Philippe de Bellechasse has had it up to his gorgeous dark eyes with being pursued by lusty ladies. His escape to England from the violence of the French Revolution took a toll on his finances as well. Gloriana may be gloriously naked, but he’s just not ready to submit to her seduction.

But when a precious family artifact is stolen, Philippe must convince Gloriana he’s not the guilty party. He’ll steal it back for her, but on his terms. Gloriana, believing he despises her, has plans of her own. Working at odds is dangerous, but working together can be more so. Is Philippe willing to risk his heart again for a deliciously tempting shrew?

Excerpt:

A clandestine meeting, particularly where nakedness is involved, is best arranged for a moonless night.
Or so Gloriana Warren told herself, for her mother would never have uttered such a scandalous dictum. Unfortunately, it was tonight or never. Tomorrow, the man she had sworn to love forever would leave Lancashire and return to London—without her. They wouldn’t be able to marry for years because of his stupid scruples about money.
Men and their tedious pride! She and the Marquis de Bellechasse loved one another. They shared the same lofty ideals. She had a substantial dowry. Marrying now made sense. Not only that, her mother would die happy.
So Gloriana was taking matters into her own hands. She had planned the upcoming encounter in glorious detail—every word, every gesture. As she emerged from the summerhouse to greet him, he would stand and stare at her, transfixed by her beauty.
“Darling Philippe,” she would say, reaching for him, offering herself without reserve. “Love is eternal. It cannot, must not be denied!”
“Ah, ma belle,” he would respond, his hand on his heart, his voice throbbing with desire. “I adore you. What a fool I was to think we could wait for years. Even another minute is too long. Tonight, I shall make you mine!”
She would fling herself into his waiting arms, swept away on the tide of his passion.
She wasn’t sure exactly how it would go after that, apart from plenty of kissing, but judging by her previous experience of Philippe’s kisses, it would be the most thrilling experience of her life.
She sneaked out the French doors, arms full of blankets, and glanced back up at Garrison House. Not a glimmer of candlelight showed in the windows. She hurried through the rose garden and skirted the lawn, keeping to the bushes and out of the moonlight. In the secret room under the summerhouse, she and her darling Philippe would be safe. Tomorrow they would announce their engagement to Mama. They would send for a special license and be married within a week.
Ten minutes later, she had set up a makeshift bed under the summerhouse and removed all her clothes. Shivering more from excitement than from the chilly night air, she waited for Philippe to arrive.
Tonight would be the most perfect night of her life.
~~~
The Marquis de Bellechasse left his horse in a convenient copse and made his careful way forward, pausing at the edge of the trees. Garrison House was reassuringly dark, but moonlight reflected off the ripples on the lake. The summerhouse gleamed white on its little knoll, exposed on all sides. He paused, listening. No sound disturbed the darkness except a nightjar complaining from a nearby oak. He hoped and prayed no one else was up and about tonight. He couldn’t afford to get caught with Gloriana Warren, but nor could he bring himself to ignore her passionate plea to see him once more before they parted.
He loved her—to the point of folly, judging by his current behavior. He had already said farewell, and yet here he was, trespassing on her brother’s estate at midnight to say it again. He dreaded her inevitable tears.
The door to the summerhouse stood wide open, which meant Gloriana was here already. Fine. Best to get it over with now. He took a deep breath and set out across the lawn.
He had almost reached the doorway when she came into view, rising from out of nowhere, her face pale, her hair loose around her bare shoulders. He halted, staring, his heart thundering. She continued to rise, her breasts round and luscious in the light of the moon. His eyes slid helplessly down the curve of her hips to the darker patch at the apex of her thighs . . .
Mordieu. He shook his head and began to back away. “No, chérie. We must not do this.”
She set her feet on the floor—she must have emerged from a trapdoor—and beckoned with those sweet arms, smiled with those lush lips. “Philippe, my darling, please come to me. I love you so much.”
“No, ma belle, I cannot.”
“But love—” She faltered, then continued toward him, arms wide. “Love is eternal. It must not be denied.”
Sacrebleu, she was declaiming like a shoddy actress on the stage. The thought revolted him. Surely his idealistic Gloriana could not cheapen herself so. Anguished, he put up his hands to fend her off. “It is not possible, Gloriana. Not yet. It would not be right.”
She hurried forward, her breasts jiggling enticingly. “Truly, we mustn’t delay. My mother may not have long to live, and seeing me married well is her dearest wish.”
He didn’t care in the least about old Lady Garrison, who was the worst sort of snob. He shook his head. “No. To wait is best.”
“Philippe, I cannot wait. I need you now.” She reached for him, her nakedness inches away.
He gritted his teeth and took another step backwards. His imbecile cock was reacting to her, but he had long ago gained control over its demands. “I am sorry, but I must go.” He turned away.
She wailed, a sharp, keening sound, and immediately a shout came from nearby. Her brother? No, he was in London. A gamekeeper?
Whoever the man might be, he was lurking here on purpose. So much for love, Philippe thought. Gloriana was just another lust-crazed woman trying to trap him into marriage. He turned and ran. Pursued by shouts and then shots, he reached his horse and galloped away.
About the Author:
Winner of the Holt Medallion, Maggie, Daphne du Maurier, Reviewer’s Choice and Epic awards, Barbara Monajem wrote her first story at eight years old about apple tree gnomes. She published a middle-grade fantasy when her children were young, then moved on to paranormal mysteries and Regency romances with intrepid heroines and long-suffering heroes (or vice versa).
Barbara loves to cook, especially soups. She used to have two items on her bucket list: to make asparagus pudding and succeed at knitting socks. Asparagus pudding proved to be pretty horrible, and she is too fumble-fingered to make socks. Now she just sticks with writing books. She lives near Atlanta, Georgia with an ever-shifting population of relatives, friends, and feline strays.
The Summoning–Contest and Excerpt–from Linda Nightingale
Nomad Authors is proud to host Linda Nightingale and her book The Summoning! Read an excerpt and then find out about Linda and the fantastic giveaway she has going below!!
Summoning: Paranormal Romance
Blurb:
Heather Morique is a witch. The problem is she doesn’t know it. Her husband Jahill was a refugee from an obscure branch of the Arawak Indians. After his death, mysterious whispers lure her to his homeland of Jamaica. Soon, she finds herself in a web of secrets, lies and illusions.
Jahill’s people worship Eyrael, the God of Wind and Sea, and his brother Sofiel, the God of Fire and Earth. The new Shaman has pitted brother against brother, and these two powerful spirits from an alternate universe fight to become the tribe’s ruling deity. Will light or darkness reign?
When Heather unwittingly summons Eyrael, these two unlikely soul mates face a dangerous fate.  The chemistry between them is more disturbing than the long-buried secrets.
Buy The Summoning here.
Research for The Summoning
In The Summoning, I played fast and loose with the religion of a group of people almost destroyed by the Spanish in the 1400s. Here, I claim poetic license. There is a small number of Arawak Indians surviving in Guyana, only about 15,000, but they do represent one-third of the Indian population in that country.
The tribe of the past were agriculturists who lived in villages of sometime 3,000 and more. I was more concerned with their religion. Their religious beliefs centered on a hieracy of nature spirits and ancestors, somewhat paralleling the hierarchies of chiefs. Bingo! Nature spirits –
The Arawaks were an indigenous people in South America but some of the tribe had migrated to the Caribbean centuries ago. The Summoning is set in Jamaica –
Eyrael, the hero, is the God of Wind and Sea to this obscure, isolated branch of the tribe. Their Shaman, a young and arrogant man, is one of the villains. I named him Taino after the Indians who migrated to the Caribbean. First villain done. –
The other villain in the story is Sofiel, the God of Fire and Earth. In the other dimension from which they have been summoned, he is Eyrael’s brother.
The Shaman prefers Sofiel to Eyrael and is working to eliminate Eyrael from worship by the people. Second villain –
The book required little research, except Jamaica. I’ve never been there. I needed the color, the sights and sounds—namely the feel of the place. So, off to the internet I went in search of Jamaica. I think I succeeded because one reviewer said, “The author’s descriptions of Jamaica and of the horse into which Eyrael shifts are detailed and lovely. You hear the hoof beats and feel the heat of the tropics.”
With all my checkmarks, you can easily see that very little research was needed. Usually, I find that research will deliver much more than I need, and I’ll find myself using sometimes a few sentences. BUT it does give me the feel of the place or whatever I’m researching and that’s all important to me.
Excerpt for The Summoning:
Eyrael, the shape shifter in the form of the perfect man, sank cross-legged on the floor and held her gaze. “We sat on that sofa. You lay back your head and closed your eyes. I asked how long you had ridden and what breed was your favorite horse. You did not answer. You had fallen asleep. I carried you to bed.”
“Carried me to bed?” She frowned, trying to remember. “Oh. When I woke up, I was naked. What happened to my dress?”
“The ceremonial dress in which they had robed you was soaked, thick with salt and sand,” he said, matter-of-factly. “If you actually want it, you will find it in the bath.”
His arrogance amazed her, but Heather was glad he hadn’t thrown her into bed in a wet dress. “They robed me? I—I don’t remember.”
“You were under some sort of spell, I believe.”
She nodded, recalling the dreamlike state. Was she shocked that this stranger—stranger than fiction—who’d saved her life had undressed her? Ask anyone who’d read her love scenes, Heather McClain was no prude. Was her alter-ego, Heather Morique?
A warm hand brushed the top of her cold foot. “You are silent. Is something wrong?”
Again, that electric trill at a mere touch! “No, no. I—thank you. I’d be dead now if you hadn’t rescued me.”
“Yes, you would. If you are ready now, you can repay me.”
“Repay you?” Why should she be surprised? No one did anything anymore for free, but what need had a spirit of money? “If you want cash, we’ll have to find an ATM.”
He leaned back against the coffee table, regarding her with amusement. “I do not need your money, beautiful witch. I seek only Pleasure, and I am certain you can exceed even my high expectations.”
Heather’s jaw dropped. “Pleasure? Do you mean you want me to…”
The God of Wind and Sea grinned, mischief dancing in his eyes. “Yes, Heather.” He sobered, shaking his head. “Not sex only. I want to make love to you.”
How could this creature simply assume she’d have sex with him? Shocked, yet flattered in an odd way, she arched her brows. “No.”
He straightened, staring at her as if she’d sprouted wings. “But I saved your life.”
Oh, dear God, she’d heard in certain cultures if you saved a life, that life belonged to you.
“Eyrael, I’m very, very grateful.” She folded trembling hands and met his gaze squarely. “I don’t intend to f-word you, however.”
Liar! When that’s exactly what I want. What am I saying? I’m recently widowed… Right…by a man who betrayed me. Why not pay my debt? Pleasant repayment.
Who was she kidding? Tempted or not, she couldn’t have sex with a total stranger.
He laughed, the melody this time with a touch of bitterness—or surprise that anyone would refuse him. “So be it.” He rose, beautiful, graceful as his sea. “Then I shall take my leave.”
5 Things I Should Do When Not Writing #MFRWauthor
As a writer, I’ve oft heard that writers should write something every single day. So today I’m writing this blog post of things I should/could do if not writing this blog post. It’s a little circular, but stick with me.
  1. Keeping house. If I were a really good wife, fulfilling the expectations of my generation, I’d say that when not writing I should clean the house. BCleaning houseut luckily for me, my mother taught me that dust bunnies regenerate (like bunnies) no matter how many times you Swiffer the floor, and you’re just going to get back in bed again, so making it is only so important. I’m not sure my husband knew my feelings on housecleaning when he married me, but he hasn’t filed for divorce yet, so I might be okay.
  2. Learning to cook like professional chef. One thing I found out about hubby soon after we married is that he likes meat and green stuff. He might tolerate other food groups, but that’s what he really likes. Nothing spicy. Nothing herb-y. Nothing with pepper in it. Nothing too Cooking like a chefdifferent from standard fare. I once proudly told my mom that Jack was so easy to cook for because he was happy with chicken and spinach. Yeah, well, after years of chicken and spinach a woman longs for a bit more. Some chili or pasta, for instance. Still, I don’t have to give up writing in order to work my way through Joy of Cooking—Jack wouldn’t eat most of that food. There’s always a silver lining!
  3. Building something. By “something” I mean cabinets or furniture. Houses. You know what I mean. Besides the fact that I can’t drive a nail straight, I’d rather buy furniture and cabinets—that way they actually stand up and are level.
  4. Making my own clothes. I learned long ago that making clothing started with cutting the pattern properly, and I never was able to do that. I tried, I really did, but some people have the knack and some don’t. There was never any question in which group I belonged. I really admire people who can sew (and knit and crochet) their own wardrobes. I wish they would do it for me…
  5. Reading. Watching HGTV and ID. Now, while the items above this are things I should/could do when not writing, this is one I would do (and do A good book trumps dust bunnies every time!do!) when not writing. When Mom taught me about dust bunnies she actually said, “Forget dust bunnies. There’s always time for a good book!” And boy, was she right! I admit to enjoying watching all of those people building furniture and cabinets and such on HGTV, as well as murdering people (and getting caught!) on ID. The brain needs a rest, y’all!
What do you do when you’re not doing something you should be doing…like writing?
Hitting the Lottery—Oh, My! #MFRWauthor
I used to say that hitting the lottery was my retirement plan. Just think. You could spend your whole life living wildly, with no concern for the morrow Lottery!and then, when you reach your Golden Years, pick the right numbers and be set up for the rest of time. How great would that be?? Unfortunately, life rarely happens like that. Still, it’s fun to imagine…
So voicing our wish lists of things we’d like to do if we won the lottery has always been a fun thing for Jack and me to do on long trips. Here is my Lottery Life Plan:
  1. Pay off bills.
  2. Buy my mom and aunt a place of their own, along with pool and pool boy.
  3. Donate lots to charities we hold dear.
  4. Travel.
  5. Travel.
  6. Travel.
There are so many places to go and so little time to see them all. For instance, I love Scotland but I haven’t seen nearly all of it. And I haven’t setScotland foot in Wales or Ireland, so I could probably spend a year or more on just those two islands. And Italy is a place I’d like to spend more time. I’d like to go on a safari to southern Africa, and see the Maldives. If I had the money to spread the trip out (with stops in Hawaii and Tahiti, for example), I’d hop on a plane to New Zealand and visit my pal Jan in Australia—someplace I’ve always wanted to go (despite their poisonous snakes and spiders). Closer to home, I’d like to revisit western Canada, and points here in the U.S. Sounds like so much fun!
However, as much fun as it is to think about and to dream about, I have to admit we’re pretty happy with life as it is. Do I want a big house, new car, Travelyacht, island, wardrobe, and expensive jewelry? Nope. Best off not having any of that stuff. It would be nice, though, to see new places and share the adventure with those I love, which really means spending time with those I love, and we can do that with very little cash at all.
Best Holiday Memory #MFRWauthor
This is a hard topic because hubby and I have shared so many great holidays, and all of them special. But for this blog post I go back to childhood. My dad was in the Navy and was often gone for holidays (birthdays, anniversaries, school events… You military families know what I mean.), but when he was at home for the Fourth of July, we always made a big celebration of it.
When we first moved to Virginia, we lived in Virginia Beach. For the Fourth, we would pack a picnic and head for the ocean, either at Virginia Beach proper or the beach at Dam Neck, where Dad was stationed the first twoShips and flags years we were there. We spent hours sunbathing, crashing through the surf, and laughing with friends or talking. Later, burned and sleepy from the sun and fresh air, we drove home to shower and change clothes and nap a spell. But later that afternoon, after a seafood dinner at our favorite local spot (Hurd’s, which I think is gone now) we headed for Norfolk and Ocean View amusement park. Not that I ever rode it, but they had a huge wooden roller coaster. I got on lots of other rides, though, and we walked around to see all the sights and hear all the sounds. We ate cotton candy and drank Coke, and generally Beach, sun, and fungorged ourselves on the celebration of our independence. After dark, fireworks lit the sky over the bay and we Oooed and Ahhhhed over the burst of lights. Finally, we made our way through the crowd to the car and drove home. Lucky me—I was able to sleep in the next day!
Jack and I still stay up to watch the fireworks, and we’re no less appreciative of the day and its significance than we were as kids. But memories of those childhood days splashing carefree through the ocean waves, the taste of spun sugar melting on the tongue, and the feeling of safety and love July Fourthsurrounding me from my parents as we walked through that amusement park, still burst through me like those rockets that filled the air over the water with light and sound.
